Legend has it that the Queen went into labor while traveling. She stopped and asked for water, saying, “mai belalei”. From that moment, the entire neighborhood in Asmara where she was came to be called “Mai Bela.”Mai Bela symbolizes that moment of need and the community’s response, blending royal history with human vulnerability and the power of communal memory.
